The Cancer Research UK shop at 6 Montpelier Vale sits in the heart of Blackheath Village, a few steps from Blackheath station. Run by a shop manager with a team of local volunteers, it sells good-quality pre-loved clothing for women, men and children, along with shoes, bags and jewellery, homeware, linens, books, CDs and DVDs, and the money it raises goes to Cancer Research UK's life-saving work.
Cancer Research UK, the UK's largest charity, funds scientists, doctors and nurses to help beat cancer sooner, and provides cancer information to the public, building on more than 120 years of discoveries. Its network of high street shops is one of the ways local communities can support that work, by shopping, donating or giving their time.
Donations of good-quality items can be dropped off at the shop during opening hours; the charity estimates an average bag is worth around £25 to its work, and it publishes a list of things it cannot accept, such as items it would have to pay to dispose of. Volunteers help sort stock, dress the window, run the till and serve customers, and anyone interested can apply online or ask to speak to the shop manager.
