A pioneering outdoor arts charity at Rothbury Hall in Greenwich since the 1980s, making giant puppets, processions, fire and light shows and community art, with studio space to hire.
Emergency Exit Arts (EEA) is one of Britain's pioneering outdoor arts companies, and a registered charity based at Rothbury Hall on Azof Street in Greenwich, its home for more than 35 years. Founded in 1980 as an artists' collective, it set out to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary, and it still does: transforming streets, parks and squares into stages for giant puppets, processions and floats, fire shows, light installations, music and spectacle.
Its mission is to enrich people's lives and help communities flourish through creativity. Alongside its own large-scale outdoor work, EEA runs workshops, collaborations and co-created projects that help people find their artistic voice, from creative learning and heritage projects to community murals and public art. It also designs and builds bespoke work for local authorities, festivals, event producers and cultural partners, with event production and consultancy in-house, and its work has become part of Greenwich life through events such as the Hi Street Fest in Woolwich and Thamesmead's 50th celebrations.
Rothbury Hall was built for community use, and EEA keeps that tradition going. The hall, with its stained glass windows, is EEA's main making space, and the company hires out a fully accessible studio with a polished wooden floor, piano and private entrance for classes, meetings and rehearsals, along with desk space for creative workers. EEA also welcomes volunteers, who help with day-to-day work and its big outdoor productions.
