A family-run pie and mash shop by Greenwich Market, serving handmade pies, mash and liquor to Goddard family recipes that go back to 1890.
Goddards at Greenwich is a family-run pie and mash shop at 22 King William Walk, by the Turnpin Lane entrance to Greenwich Market. The Goddard family have been making London pie, mash and liquor since 1890, and they say the recipes haven't changed since. The pies are handmade on the premises and baked fresh every day.
Alfred (AJ) Goddard started the business on Evelyn Street in Deptford in 1890. His sons Bob and George took it over in 1936, and in 1952 a second shop opened in Greenwich, the same year the Cutty Sark went into dry dock. Bob went on to run the Greenwich shop, then in 1972 handed it to his son Dave and Dave's wife Pam, who added Sunday opening. Their sons Jeff and Kane worked in the shop from the age of ten. After the family property was sold in 2006, Jeff and Kane set up Goddard's Pies with business partner Sean Horton and brought the family trade back to Greenwich at King William Walk.
The traditional order is a 100% British minced beef pie with mash and liquor, finished with salt, pepper and chilli vinegar, with hot or jellied eels if you want them. The wider range takes in steak and kidney, steak and ale, chicken and mushroom, chicken and ham, lamb and rosemary, chilli minced beef, and cheese and onion pies, plus a veggie soya pie, vegan pies and a beef and veg pasty, all served with mash and liquor or gravy. Gluten-free pie, mash and liquor is available too. For afters there are handmade fruit pies and crumbles and bread and butter pudding, with custard or ice cream.
Their meat comes from a family butcher several times a week and is fresh and 100% British. The licensed, air-conditioned restaurant seats around 125 across two floors, with traditional wooden benches as well as tables and chairs, and highchairs for younger diners. The self-contained first floor holds around 75 for pie and mash parties and functions, and a smaller room on the ground floor takes about 25. You can also take away, or order delivery through Just Eat and Uber Eats.
