Handmade Oya jewellery at Greenwich Market: micro-crochet and needle-lace necklaces, fruit and flower earrings, flower-trimmed scarves and bridal accessories by an independent maker.
Meli Design is the stall of an independent designer-maker at Greenwich Market, creating contemporary textile jewellery and accessories entirely by hand using micro crochet and needle lace. The work is inspired by the textile heritage of Anatolia and the Ottoman Empire, especially the centuries-old art of Oya, reinterpreted for modern life rather than copied from historical patterns.
With a background in Fine Art and a career in fashion design and styling, the designer works with exceptionally fine silk, viscose and other carefully chosen fibres, sometimes combined with vintage and antique elements. The result is jewellery that looks delicate but is made to last: pieces are made in small quantities, stitch by stitch, and are washable and reusable.
The range covers necklaces, earrings, bracelets, rings, headbands, handbags, scarves trimmed with crocheted flowers, glasses chains and other accessories, plus bridal jewellery, hair accessories and garters. Look out for the playful fruit earrings, such as cherries and berries, and the flower-garland necklaces.
Visit the stall in Greenwich Market to see the colours and detail up close, or browse and order from the online shop.
