An elegant Georgian villa on the edge of Greenwich Park, home to the Wernher Collection of nearly 700 extraordinary artworks. Run by English Heritage and open on select dates.
Tucked between Greenwich Park and Blackheath on Chesterfield Walk, Ranger's House is a handsome red-brick Georgian villa that once belonged to the Ranger of Greenwich Park. You may recognise its frontage from the screen, but the real treasure is inside.
The Wernher Collection was gathered by the diamond magnate Sir Julius Wernher, who could afford the very best and loved what he called the "splendidly ugly": tiny, curious works of art crafted from precious materials. Nearly 700 pieces fill the rooms, from Dutch Old Masters and Renaissance bronzes to dazzling medieval and Renaissance jewellery, silver treasures and tapestries showing scenes of Chinese life, all set among rich red silk walls.
Visiting
English Heritage opens the house on select dates, so check the official page and book before you go. The small garden at the side leads straight into the Rose Garden in Greenwich Park, so it pairs beautifully with a walk across the park or a coffee in Blackheath village.
