The heritage charity that cares for the Royal Borough's historic collections and runs Charlton House & Gardens, a Jacobean manor with free gardens, tours, events and a tea room.
Royal Greenwich Heritage Trust is a registered charity, formed in 2014, that looks after key historic buildings, objects and records in the Royal Borough of Greenwich and brings that heritage to life through exhibitions, tours, walks and activities for all ages. Its flagship property is Charlton House & Gardens.
Charlton House was built between 1607 and 1612 for the tutor to Prince Henry of Wales, son of James I, and is one of the UK's finest examples of a Jacobean manor house. Over the years it has been home to nobility and prime ministers, and served as a medical centre in times of trial. Entry is free and visitors can explore the house at their own pace, with guided Historic Fridays tours and private tours available to book.
The historic gardens and grounds are free to visit and include the house's original walled gardens, one of James I's mulberry trees and a summer house attributed to Inigo Jones. Frilly's Tea Room, at the centre of the house, serves food and drinks and vintage afternoon teas.
The house hosts a year-round programme of public events, offers spaces for private hire and celebrations, and runs heritage learning sessions for schools (KS1 and KS2). The Royal Borough of Greenwich Heritage Trust is registered charity no. 1157164.
