An 18th-century Gothic folly tower hidden in the ancient woods of Shooters Hill, with a rooftop viewing platform looking out across London and Kent, a cosy tea room, stargazing nights and weddings.
Deep in Castle Wood on Shooters Hill, Severndroog Castle rises out of the trees like something from a fairy tale. This triangular Gothic tower is run by a local trust, and climbing its spiral staircase to the rooftop viewing platform rewards you with one of the finest panoramas in south-east London.
Inside, the castle rooms tell its story, and the ground-floor tea room is a favourite stop for walkers on the Green Chain and in Oxleas Woods, with no ticket needed. The trust also runs events through the year, from Christmas producers' markets to stargazing on the roof with the Flamsteed Astronomy Society, and the castle is a romantic wedding venue.
Good to know
The trust is monitoring some cracks in the building with structural engineers, who have advised it is safe to open while investigations continue; check the website for the latest updates. Every ticket helps look after the castle and keep it open.
