Greenwich's Anglican parish church, designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor and built 1712–14, with daily worship, a strong choral tradition and free lunchtime recitals.
St Alfege Church is the Anglican parish church in the centre of Greenwich, within the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site. After the roof of the old church collapsed in a storm in 1710, Nicholas Hawksmoor was chosen to design the new St Alfege, which was built between 1712 and 1714. The tower was remodelled later, in 1730, by local architect John James.
The church has a diverse congregation and a rich musical tradition. The Sunday Parish Eucharist is a sung service with St Alfege Church Choir and is broadcast live on the church's YouTube channel. Other regular services include a said Holy Communion from the Book of Common Prayer, a monthly Choral Evensong, Abide (a service of meditation and contemplation) and a monthly service in Luganda.
Visitors are welcome outside service times. Free lunchtime recitals take place each week, many of them performed by students from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.
The church also offers weddings, baptisms and funerals, children's and youth ministry, and heritage volunteering. The Parochial Church Council of St Alfege, Greenwich is a registered charity (no. 1133046).
