One of London's oldest bookshops, on the corner of Tranquil Vale and Royal Parade since 1949: old, rare and secondhand books, signed first editions, vintage maps and engravings, with views over the heath.
The Bookshop on the Heath has been selling books at the top of Tranquil Vale since 1949, which makes it one of London's oldest bookshops. Its bright corner shopfront looks straight out across the heath, and inside it's all towering shelves and the happy feeling that something good is waiting to be found.
It specialises in old and rare books, signed first editions and printed collectables, plus vintage engravings and quality reproduction antique maps. The stock changes constantly and covers literature and poetry, vintage children's books, crime and adventure, military and political history, travel, art and photography, local history, biography and drama, with big recent collections of cookery and architecture.
Only a fraction of the stock is online, so it really rewards a browse, and the staff know their shelves remarkably well. It was named in Time Out's top independent bookshops in London for 2025.
