The Cheeseboard is an independent cheesemonger and deli on Royal Hill in Greenwich. Michael Jones, known locally as Mr Cheese, opened the shop in 1985 when he was just 19, and nearly four decades on he can still be found behind the counter. Over the years he has also appeared on BBC MasterChef and opened Drings butchers and the Ellis & Jones fishmonger nearby.
Cheese is the heart of the shop. There are well over 100 cheeses in the fridges at any time, made in small batches on farms across Great Britain and Europe and changing with the seasons, all chosen and looked after by the shop's cheesemongers. Alongside them is a well-stocked deli and larder: home-made plum frangipane, focaccia, biscuits, vegetarian quiches and soups from resident chef Becky, bread from local bakeries including Charlton Bakehouse, Fingals and Paul Rhodes, and Brick Lane bagels and Babelle canelés at the weekend.
The shop also sells beer and wine, chutneys, crackers and other things to go with cheese, plus hampers, gift vouchers, cheese celebration cakes and a cheese club. It runs tastings and corporate events, and offers free local delivery by electric cargo bike to nearby postcodes, as well as UK delivery through its online shop.
