Riverside Regency tavern on the Thames, opened in 1837 and loved by Dickens: naval paintings, river views, seasonal pub food, 20+ beers on tap, 100+ whiskies and private rooms.
The Trafalgar Tavern rises straight out of the River Thames on Park Row in maritime Greenwich. It opened in 1837, the year of Queen Victoria's accession, and its elegant bow windows and canopied balconies, painted by James Tissot, are a rare example of late Regency riverside architecture in London. The tavern was famous for its whitebait dinners, attended by London's literary, artistic and political circles, and Charles Dickens used it as the setting for Bella Wilfer's wedding breakfast in Our Mutual Friend.
Inside, the walls are hung with artefacts and paintings telling the story of Britain's naval history, and each room is named after a great victory or naval figure. Guests can eat in the Nile Restaurant or relax in the Collingwood Bar with views over the river, and there is an outside terrace for warmer days. The seasonal menu covers pub lunches, Sunday roasts and favourites such as their fish and chips, while the bar pours more than 20 local and national beers on tap, over 100 whiskies, a broad gin collection and classic cocktails.
The tavern is open every day of the year, hosts quiz and comedy nights, and has a series of characterful private rooms, including the Nelson Room, the Hawke & Howe Bar, the Hardy Suite, Cribb's Parlour and the Pickle Room, for weddings, private dining and parties.
