Community Spotlight: Cancer Research UK, Blackheath
The Cancer Research UK shop in Blackheath Village sells pre-loved clothes, books and homeware, run by a shop manager and local volunteers.
A few steps from Blackheath station, the Cancer Research UK shop at 6 Montpelier Vale is a familiar part of the Village. It's run by a shop manager with a team of local volunteers, and it sells good-quality pre-loved clothing for women, men and children, along with shoes, bags and jewellery, homeware, linens, books, CDs and DVDs.
Every sale supports Cancer Research UK's life-saving work. The UK's largest charity funds scientists, doctors and nurses to help beat cancer sooner, and gives cancer information to the public, building on more than 120 years of discoveries. Its high street shops are one of the most direct ways a local community can play a part.
There are three simple ways to help. Shop there, especially for Christmas gifts with a story behind them. Donate good-quality items during opening hours; the charity publishes a list of things it can't accept, so it's worth a quick check before you bag things up. Or give some time: volunteers sort stock, dress the window, run the till and serve customers, and you can apply online or ask to speak to the shop manager.
If you've been meaning to clear out a wardrobe before the festive season, this is a good place to start.
