Community Spotlight: Oxfam in Blackheath and Greenwich
Oxfam's two local shops, on Tranquil Vale and College Approach, sell donated books, music and clothes to fight poverty, and always welcome volunteers.
Oxfam has two shops on our patch, and each has its own character.
Oxfam Shop Blackheath, at 68 Tranquil Vale in the heart of the Village, is the all-rounder. It sells donated clothes and accessories, books, music and homewares, along with Fairtrade food and greetings cards. It's a handy drop-off point for donations of books, clothing, homewares and music when you're clearing a wardrobe or a bookshelf.
Oxfam Bookshop Greenwich, on College Approach a short walk from Greenwich Market and the Cutty Sark, is one for browsers. Oxfam describes itself as the UK's largest second-hand bookseller, and its bookshops range from modern fiction and leisure reading to specialist subjects, classics, and rare or collectable books. There's a good selection of vinyl, CDs and DVDs too, and it accepts donations of books and music, so it's a natural home for a box of read paperbacks or an old record collection.
Every sale supports Oxfam's work to fight poverty and inequality around the world.
Both shops rely on volunteers, who sort donations, price stock and serve customers. If you can give a few hours a week, ask in store or apply through Oxfam's website. And if you can't get in, stock from Oxfam's shops can be browsed on its online shop.
