Community Spotlight: Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice
Founded by local people, Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice cares for around 3,000 people a year. Carol concert, Lights of Love and more this Christmas.
Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice was founded by the community, for the community. In 1985 two friends living with cancer, Pat Jeavons and Don Sturrock, launched a fundraising campaign called "Give us a Quid", and the hospice opened in Abbey Wood in 1994.
Today it gives specialist care and support to around 3,000 people a year living with a terminal or life-limiting illness, along with their families and carers, at home, in hospital, in the community and at the hospice, day or night. Much of that care is funded locally, through events, donations, gifts in wills and the charity's shops, with the help of more than 350 volunteers.
Two of its shops are on our patch: Trafalgar Road in East Greenwich, a former bank spread over two floors, and Greenwich High Road, known for designer and high-end clothing. Both welcome good-quality donations.
Christmas is a busy and meaningful season for the hospice:
13 and 14 November: Boogie Wonderland, a night of dancing
Friday 4 December: carol concert in the chapel of the Old Royal Naval College
Sunday 6 December: Lights of Love, dedicating a light in memory of someone special
8 to 10 December: Santa in the City, a Christmas fun run and walk
Saturday 12 December: Morning with Santa
1 to 18 December: Christmas Jumper Day for workplaces, schools and groups
