Community Spotlight: Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park
Four acres of urban wetland on the Thames Path, cared for by The Conservation Volunteers. Winter Fayre on Sunday 6 December.
Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park is one of the borough's most surprising green spaces: four acres of freshwater habitat tucked beside the Thames Path. Open since 2002, it is owned by the land management charity the Land Trust and cared for by The Conservation Volunteers (TCV), with park wardens and a dedicated team of volunteers.
Two lakes and marshland sit at its heart, ringed by alder woodland, with a wildflower meadow in the middle. Two bird hides give close-up views of birdlife that changes with the seasons, with snipe and water rail in winter. It's a peaceful spot for a walk, some birdwatching or a family visit, and the park is a classroom too, with hands-on school visits led by the wardens.
The best way to support it is to roll up your sleeves. Volunteers are always welcome at the regular Wednesday conservation workdays, and tasks range from reed cutting and marsh clearance to willow coppicing. TCV says it especially needs volunteers for willow coppicing in January and February, which it calls warming and rewarding work. Businesses can book corporate team days too, and the Friends of Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park raises funds for special projects.
