Community Spotlight: The Space
The Space, a charity-run theatre in a Grade II listed former church across the river, hosts the Voila! Festival from 2 to 21 November.
Just across the river from Greenwich, on Westferry Road on the Isle of Dogs, The Space is a theatre and arts centre in a characterful Grade II listed former church. It is run by St Paul's Arts Trust, a registered charity since 1989, which exists to widen access to the arts and support new artists. The venue opened in 1996 and marked its 30th anniversary this September.
The building began life as St Paul's Presbyterian church, and its foundation stone was laid by John Scott Russell, the engineer who built the Great Eastern at nearby Burrells Wharf. Today it hosts more than 200 performances a year, mostly theatre, with music, dance and comedy too, and shows that started here have gone on to other London venues, the Edinburgh Fringe and national tours.
There are plenty of ways to get involved. SpaceWorks, its participatory theatre company, welcomes anyone with an interest in theatre, whatever their experience, and there's a volunteer programme and Tech Academy for people who'd like to work behind the scenes. The Space Bar, in the former vestry, is run in-house, so every drink supports the theatre.
Coming up:
2 to 21 November: Voila! Festival, the Space's third year celebrating migrant-led and international theatre
Friday 13 November: Uncovered Opera Company in a one-off concert performance of Verdi's Simon Boccanegra
