Community Spotlight: Emergency Exit Arts
From Rothbury Hall in East Greenwich, Emergency Exit Arts has turned streets and parks into stages since 1980. How to volunteer and get involved.
Giant puppets, processions, fire shows and light installations: this is the world of Emergency Exit Arts. EEA is one of Britain's pioneering outdoor arts companies and a registered charity, and Rothbury Hall on Azof Street in East Greenwich has been its home for more than 35 years.
It was founded in 1980 as an artists' collective, setting out to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary. Its mission is to enrich people's lives and help communities flourish through creativity, and alongside its own large-scale work it runs workshops, heritage projects, community murals and public art that help people find their artistic voice. Locally, its work has become part of Greenwich life through events such as the Hi Street Fest in Woolwich and Thamesmead's 50th celebrations.
Rothbury Hall was built for community use, and EEA keeps that tradition going. The hall, with its stained glass windows, is its main making space, and it hires out an accessible studio with a wooden floor and piano for classes, meetings and rehearsals, along with desk space for creative workers.
EEA welcomes volunteers, who help with day-to-day work and with its big outdoor productions, and donations help keep its community work going.
