Community Spotlight: Lewisham Arthouse
Since 1992, the artist-led Lewisham Arthouse has run 40 studios, a gallery and beginner-friendly classes from the Old Deptford Library.
Lewisham Arthouse is a not-for-profit, artist-led co-operative that has been part of south-east London's creative life since 1992. Its home is the Old Deptford Library on Lewisham Way, a Grade II listed Edwardian building, where it runs 40 affordable artist studios alongside a public gallery, classes and workshops.
What makes it special is how it is run. The Arthouse is entirely in the hands of its members, and every member gives at least five hours a month to curating, fundraising, inclusion work and caring for the building. That shared effort keeps rents affordable and keeps the doors open to the public, including an analogue photography darkroom and a pottery kiln.
The Project Space is one of the most affordable places to exhibit in London, open to emerging artists, curators, community groups and anyone who has found traditional galleries hard to reach.
If you've been meaning to try something creative this winter, the classes are a good start. There's life drawing with Stephen Palmer, who has taught there since 1996, ceramics for all levels, printing without a press on Wednesday evenings and Thursday mornings, and tapestry weaving, with many sessions suitable for complete beginners.
With a long-term lease on offer from Lewisham Council, the co-operative is working towards repairs and better public access, and donations to its crowdfund help secure that future.
