Hawksmoor's St Alfege is Greenwich's parish church, with lunchtime recitals, concerts and volunteers who keep its doors open every day.
St Alfege is the Anglican parish church at the heart of Greenwich, inside the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site. Designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor after the old church's roof collapsed in a storm in 1710, it was built between 1712 and 1714, and it remains a working church with a diverse congregation and a strong choral tradition.
Visitors are welcome outside service times, and music is a big part of church life. The lunchtime recital series runs on Thursdays and Saturdays at 1.05pm, many of them performed by students from Trinity Laban, and the church hosts concerts throughout the year.
Volunteering here is varied and rewarding. Heritage Ambassadors help keep the church open to visitors every day, Heritage Tour Guides lead tours for schools and the public, and a group meets once a fortnight in the church hall to cook single-portion meals for the 999 Club in Deptford. There are roles supporting worship too, from welcomers and readers to the choir and hospitality team.
Coming up this month:

Saturday 7 November, 7.30pm: Greenwich Chamber Orchestra concert
