Black Friday lands on Friday 27 November this year. Eight days later, on Saturday 5 December, comes Small Business Saturday, the national day for shopping small. Our suggestion: skip the online scramble and do your Christmas shopping on the high streets of Greenwich, London and Blackheath. Every shop below is in our local guide, and we checked what each one sells on its own website.

For foodies

The Cheeseboard has been selling cheese in Greenwich since 1985. Its gift hampers come in three sizes at £20, £30 and £70, and its selection boxes run from £34 to £55. For a present that keeps giving, a month of its Cheese Club is £45, and gift vouchers go from £10 to £50.

Greenwich Market's Lantern Parade and Christmas Lights Switch-On is on Wednesday 18 November, with the countdown at 5pm. There are no market stalls on Monday 9 and Tuesday 10 November while the lights go up, but the shops stay open.

On Small Business Saturday itself, Blackheath Lights Up for Christmas from 4:30pm to 5:30pm. That weekend, 5 and 6 December, the Royal Greenwich Heritage Trust at Charlton House holds its Christmas Fair, with hand-crafted gifts and food. It's free to attend.
